3.3.2 Microbial Degradation of Waterlogged Archaeological Wood

The knowledge of degradation processes is essential for the development of conservation methods and in-situ preservation of wooden cultural heritage (52, 53).

Waterlogged archaeological wood is degraded very slowly in comparison to wood that is located above ground. The special environmental conditions below the ground result in a prolonged decay process that is due to the extremely low oxygen concentration, which only allows a bacterial degradation of wood. Erosion bacteria types have been described. On the other hand, soft rot fungi are microbes that often are found active in a more oxygenated aquatic environment (53).
